In
what way is the Roman legacy in relation to the epic genre evident in our
current society?
The
Latin language, which was the official language, began to be socialized because
of territorial expansion that Rome experienced as an Empire. Latin becomes the
basis of our language and of most of the languages of Latin America. The above
shows us that one of the most important legacies of the Romans and that is very
present among us is the Spanish language. Ours is a language derived from the
language spoken in Rome: Latin, Portuguese, French, Romanian and Italian are
also derived
Latin fulfilled a task of disseminating knowledge, the influence of Latin in many words that we use today is very valuable.
For example, our calendar has its origin in one adopted by the Roman ruler Julius Caesar. The names of several months come from Latin. August in honor of Cesar Augusto, September comes from the Latin word for “the seventh month”, October means the eighth month.
Latin today is used to give the scientific names of plants and animals. Likewise, the Catholic Church, which proclaims itself heir to Rome, still has Latinas the official language today.
Among the authors of the epic genre of the Roman era that we can highlight is to Publio Virgilio who wrote the Aeneid, the main Latin epic poem, where his character Aeneas represented the hero of Roman society in the time of Augustus}
It is important to note that the epic genre of the Romans, continued in the Modern and Contemporary age, despite ecclesiastical criticism and reformulations, which were not enough to prevent this tradition of epic narrative from continuing to flourish in the contemporary age.
The epic in the current classic novel is still the
consequence of those latin texts of ancient Rome that leave us all the wisdom
that only repeats itself with other novel formulas, but in constant cloning, an
evident sample of the Mediterranean ancestors in our Literature is Ulysses by
James Joyce, the novel that is always presented as reference
The epic genre of the Romans is characterized by the use of a solemn language and majestic legendary feats of heroes or the mythical origins of a people
In Roman literature many of the aspects and forms of Greek literature can be markedly observed. It is so much so that there are literary genres that were directly adapted, despite the fact that over the years, these styles were modified to form the authors' own style.
Among its main characteristics, it stands out for becoming an instrument of the Roman state, through its oral dissemination, the state had an influence on the opinion of its inhabitants.
This, literature was used for social division, and although the only ones who had access to it were lawyers. The common citizen only had to comply with the issues that the government made them.
The authors of the vast majority of Roman literary works were anonymous, especially in early Roman literature.
As the literary style developed, several authors established themselves as teachers. They are also very uneven in the development of their own literatures.
The previous investigation of the problem question
helps us to write questions and hypothesis propositions.
